He Waka Matauranga is a community adult literacy provider and has been operating within the communities of Tāmaki Makau Rau (Auckland) since Hui tanguru (February) 1990. As a treaty based organisation, we are committed to upholding the principles of Te Tiriti O Waitangi within areas of operation, policy and engagement. We are also focussed on supporting our Pacific Island communities and their fanau in addition to serving our diverse wider communities.

Te Poupou (member scheme of Literacy Aotearoa) provides a unique contribution to community development. In being unique, we place an emphasis on student centred learning – tailoring our provision to meet the specific goals and aspirations of the individual learner, who is not in a position to commit to more formal and generic programmes. This means that tuition is flexible and can take place during the day or evening, at our office or at an alternative venue that is suitable to both learner/s and tutor/s.

As well as offering free provision, He Waka Matauranga maintains relationships with leading Adult and Community Education (ACE) providers and government agencies to offer integrated literacy programmes and literacy specific provision. Te Poupou also develops and provides specific workplace literacy programmes for businesses committed to raising the literacy skills of their employees, therefore contributing to their personal as well as professional development and well-being.

He Waka Matauranga works closely with community organisations, local marae, community houses, tertiary providers and schools to meet the needs of prospective learners, their whānau/fanau and/or target groups.

He Waka Matauranga works with individuals who have identified a need to develop their literacy skills, either in a one-to-one situation or group capacity. Literacy programmes are designed to meet the assessed literacy needs of each learner and tuition is provided contextually to achieve the negotiated learning goals.

He Waka Matauranga offers a range of literacy services that support learners in:

  • Reading and Writing
  • Communications
  • Oracy
  • Numeracy
  • Obtaining Learner Drivers Licence (theory based)
  • Raranga (Traditional Māori Weaving)
  • Te Reo me ona tikanga Māori
  • CV Preparation
